The Riverside Historical Society (RHS) will unveil seven new local history books at its 4th Annual Local History Book Fair on Sunday, October 6, 2024. The event is open from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. in the basement of the Riverside Medical Clinic, 7117 Brockton Avenue.

The books were written by local historians and authors, and several of them will be on hand to meet visitors. Attendees can also browse a silent auction of rare books and ephemera.

The fair ends with a special presentation by Dr. Vince Moses at Fairmount Park at 1:00 p.m.

Among the debuting titles is The People's Playground - Riverside's Fairmount Park, published by the RHS. It is a compilation of writings on the park. It includes a piece from the Raincross Gazette titled "Fairmount Park Isn't Scary," whose author said they were thrilled to take part and hope it will not be their last contribution to the story of the city.

Steve Lech has written Riverside's Street Names. He also co-wrote Back in the Day, Volumes 5 and 6, with Kim Jarrell Johnson. Glenn Wenzel is the author of Riverside and the Salt Lake Route.

The society itself is behind two more of the new releases: the Riverside Compendium and the annual Journal of the Riverside Historical Society.

The fair highlights the work of local historians such as Moses, Wenzel and Lech, among others, who document the city's past. History depends on careful attention to what is already known, the source article noted, along with the belief that stories from the past remain to be found.

More information about the Riverside Historical Society and the Book Fair is available on the RHS website.
