Elon Musk has significantly accelerated his financial intervention in the upcoming midterms, injecting more than $76 million into his personal political committee, America PAC, during the first two weeks of October. This substantial infusion of capital was reported in a filing submitted to the Federal Election Commission on Thursday evening. The move marks the most aggressive spending push by the billionaire’s committee in the final stretch of the campaign cycle, signaling a high-stakes effort to influence the balance of power in Congress.
The Texas Senate race served as the primary target for this new wave of funding. The PAC allocated $15.2 million specifically to that single contest, a figure that is double the amount spent in that state during the entire summer. The majority of this sum, $12.4 million, was directed toward advertising that criticized Democratic candidate James Talarico, while $2.8 million was spent promoting his Republican opponent, Ken Paxton. Subsequent daily filings indicate that another $9.1 million has been deployed against Talarico, bringing his total cycle spending against the Democrat to nearly $28 million.
This level of expenditure represents a significant portion of the committee’s overall activity. The $28 million spent against Talarico accounts for approximately 40 percent of everything America PAC has spent to support or oppose candidates in this election cycle. Furthermore, the committee has shifted its media strategy, dedicating $11.4 million to digital advertising in just two weeks. This digital spend is nearly equal to the combined total of their mail and texting campaigns, reflecting a move toward online engagement in the final days before voters head to the polls.
The financial commitment from Musk is the largest known individual contribution in this midterm election. According to an analysis of Federal Election Commission filings, Musk has donated more than $445 million to various Republican political groups this cycle. Of that total, more than $165 million has flowed directly to America PAC since July. Despite the scale of these donations, the committee declined to provide further comment on its strategies or future plans as the election date approaches.
Musk’s involvement in the race extends beyond just money, as he has actively used his social media platforms to influence public perception. On Wednesday, he posted on X that there is “something deeply wrong with Talarico,” going as far as to label the candidate “a creep.” He also made claims without presented evidence that Talarico would vote to take away citizens' children and transition them. Earlier in the month, he amplified a false narrative that Talarico had been treated at a mental health facility, prompting a sharp rebuttal from Talarico who stated, “There is something deeply wrong with a political system that allows one trillionaire to buy his own personal US Senator.”
Despite the massive spending, the Texas race remains statistically undecided. A recent poll conducted by Emerson College among 1,000 likely voters in the state, carried out from October 17 to 19, shows Talarico leading by two points. The Democrat sits at 48 percent while Paxton is at 46 percent, a difference that falls within the poll’s margin of error of three points. This tight race suggests that the final days of advertising and campaigning will be critical in determining the outcome.
The stakes for Musk involve more than just securing a friendly Senator. If Democrats gain control of the House, leadership has indicated they will launch investigations into his role in the Department of Government Efficiency, or DOGE. Lawmakers also plan to scrutinize federal contracts awarded to his companies. Zoe Lofgren, a Democrat from California, described the number of potential conflicts of interest as “astounding,” suggesting that a unified Democratic Congress would pose significant challenges to his business interests.
Silicon Valley Democrats have added another layer of pressure by targeting SpaceX’s Starshield satellite service, which operates in Ukraine. In a letter sent to the White House on Friday, Representatives Sam Liccardo, Jimmy Panetta, and Ro Khanna demanded an investigation into the service. They vowed that the next Congress “will closely scrutinize federal funding awarded to Mr. Musk’s businesses,” indicating that the political consequences of the midterms could have direct financial implications for the tech mogul’s sprawling enterprise.
As the election enters its final phase, the combination of record-breaking personal spending and high-profile social media campaigns underscores the unique role of major technology executives in contemporary American politics. With millions of dollars deployed in the last fortnight and key races still within striking distance, the next few days will determine whether these efforts translate into legislative power.
