OpenAI is reportedly close to finalizing a new round of private financing that would push its valuation to a record-breaking $1.25 trillion. This move signals a strategic shift away from an immediate public listing in favor of securing additional capital while still private. The company aims to raise up to $30 billion in this latest effort.
Sources indicate that the round is being led by Coatue Management. It also includes participation from investors based in the United Arab Emirates. This structure suggests a blend of major institutional backing and significant regional financial support. The funding is currently set at a pre-money valuation of $1.25 trillion.
This latest development follows a similar report from a month ago. At that time, Bloomberg reported that the company was working on a $30 billion raise at a slightly higher valuation of $1.4 trillion. Negotiations are still ongoing, meaning the final terms could change. The current figures represent a significant adjustment in the ongoing discussions.
There may be more to this deal than just cash. Reports suggest the funding from UAE investors could be tied to a separate agreement. This agreement would likely secure additional computing capacity for OpenAI from the region. Such a combination of capital and infrastructure would be a major strategic advantage. OpenAI has declined to comment on the specifics.
If the company successfully commands a valuation above $1 trillion, it will become the most valuable private company in history. This milestone would set a new benchmark for the tech industry. It would also raise the expectations for its upcoming initial public offering. Investors would likely expect the public market to support this massive number.
OpenAI filed confidential paperwork for an IPO in June. This filing came after its previous funding round in March, which valued the company at $852 billion on a post-money basis. The jump from $852 billion to a potential $1.25 trillion in just a few months highlights the rapid growth in investor enthusiasm for the sector.
The high valuation could also impact the plans of its main competitor, Anthropic. Many observers believe Anthropic is closer to launching its own IPO. Rumors suggest its public filing could appear at any time. CNBC reports that Anthropic is seeking a valuation between $1.5 and $2 trillion for its public debut.
Anthropic raised $65 billion in May at a $965 billion valuation. At the time, many believed this would be its final major private round before going public. It also filed confidential paperwork in June. The competitive dynamics between the two leading AI labs are now heavily tied to their respective valuations and timelines for entering the public market.
